The Barca – Rožňava railway is a railway line in Slovakia . It leads from Barca , a district of Košice , via Moldava nad Bodvou and Turňa nad Bodvou to Rožňava . It is part of the southern Slovak main line from Zvolen to Košice. The line from Barca to Haniska is electrified and, in sections, has two tracks.

history

The concession to build the line from what was then Kaschau in the Kingdom of Hungary to Turňa nad Bodvou was granted to Aurel Münnich und Partner on December 26, 1889. The line was opened on October 12, 1890, the construction cost together with the branches Moldau – Metzenseifen and Počkaj – Baňa Lucia (both opened on August 1, 1894) 3,850,000 crowns. In terms of meaning, it was a local railway . In 1896, the line from Sajóecseg was connected to the station in Turňa nad Bodvou , but the part from Turňa nad Bodvou to Tornanádaska has been closed for several years.

After the First World War and the Treaty of Trianon , the line was on the territory of the newly founded Czechoslovakia . As a result of the First Vienna Arbitration , she returned to Hungary from 1938 to 1945.

Lipovník Railway Station (2015)

After the restoration of Czechoslovakia in 1945 there was a need for a second main connection from eastern Slovakia to the rest of the country, as the Košice – Žilina railway , which was still being expanded, was overloaded. To close the gap with the Zvolen – Rožňava line, the 31 km long connection from Turňa nad Bodvou to Rožňava was built, which cuts through the limestone massif of the Slovak Karst near Lipovník in the Jablonovský tunnel (3148 m) . The line was opened on January 25, 1955. This completed the continuous rail link through the south of Slovakia.

In 1965 the section from Barca to Haniska was electrified. Since the 1970s, some sections have been double-tracked.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia .

In the 2013/2014 timetable, four pairs of local trains run daily between Turňa nad Bodvou and Košice . On the further course only express trains run, which stop in Moldava nad Bodvou and Rožňava and partly in Haniska pri Košiciach and Turňa nad Bodvou.
