The Moldava nad Bodvou – Medzev railway is a regional railway connection in Slovakia . It runs in the south of the Slovak Ore Mountains from Moldava nad Bodvou to Medzev ( Metzenseifen ).

history

The line was licensed by the Hungarian Ministry of Commerce on August 26, 1893 as part of the Kassa-Tornai helyi érdekú vasut (local railway Kaschau – Torna; Slovak: Miestna železnica Košice – Turňa ). On August 1, 1894, it was opened together with the branch to Baňa Lucia .

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in October 1918 and the establishment of the new state of Czechoslovakia , the line was managed by the newly established Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). From the 1930s onwards, the ČSD began using modern motorized trains in tourist traffic, which enabled both a compaction of the timetable and a significant reduction in travel times. The 1938 summer timetable listed seven pairs of trains, all of which were run as motorized trains.

After the First Vienna Arbitration , the predominantly Hungarian-populated areas of Czechoslovakia and with it the stretch between Moldava nad Bodvou (Hungarian: Szepsi) and Počkaj (Hungarian: Ferenctelep) returned to Hungary in November 1938. The operator of this section was again (until 1945) the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV). The Slovak state railway Slovenské železnice (SŽ) operated the short remaining section now as an island operation. In the summer timetable of 1941, two pairs of cross-border passenger trains ran between Szepsi and Medzev / Metzenseifen, with the stop at the border station at Ferenctelep generally being around half an hour.

After the Second World War, the local railway company was nationalized and the line was integrated into the network of the re-established ČSD. In the 1950s, the passenger train schedule was condensed to up to ten pairs of passenger trains. The branch line Počkaj – Baňa Lucia, which was previously only operated in freight traffic, was also served with a few journeys.

Jasov stop (2009)

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . On February 2nd, 2003 the ŽSR stopped the scheduled travel due to insufficient occupancy. The last valid annual timetable from 2002 recorded five pairs of passenger trains. The travel time between Moldava nad Bodvou and Medzev was 28 minutes.

In 2015, a modern interface to intercity bus traffic (“terminál integovanej dopravy”) was created at the Moldava nad Bodvou mesto stop. Since then, the passenger trains that previously ran from Košice to Turňa nad Bodvou have been tied through to Moldava nad Bodvou mesto. In the 2019 annual timetable, seven pairs of passenger trains run to and from Košice.

In the medium term, the Moldava nad Bodvou – Moldava nad Bodvou mesto section, together with the Haniska – Moldava nad Bodvou line, is to be electrified for tourist traffic.
