Jasov (German Jossau / Joß , Hungarian Jászó ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 3695 (December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Košice-okolie , a part of Košický kraj .

The municipality of Jasov is located on the upper Bodva on the northeastern edge of the Slovak Karst mountain range ( Slovenský kras ), 21 kilometers west of Košice .
Jasovský Podzámok (German Pisendorf ) , which was incorporated in 1950, belongs to Jasov .
The neighboring municipalities of Jasov are Prakovce in the north, Poproč in the northeast, Rudník in the east, Debraď in the south, Turňa nad Bodvou in the southwest, Medzev in the west and Vyšný Medzev in the northwest.
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1243 as Jazow and was already an important settlement.
Until 1918 the community belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . She came back to Hungary for a short time from 1938 to 1945 through the First Vienna Arbitration .
He is known primarily for the famous monastery of Premonstratensians , which dominates the town. In the Middle Ages it should be expanded into a mining center (German with the help of miners), so the Jasov 1243 to mountain town and was also a member of the seven Upper Hungarian mining towns later. After the failure of the project due to inefficient deposits, the place developed as a random complex.
In Jasov there is the Jossau Cave ( Jasovská jaskyňa in Slovak ), a stalactite cave open all year round and at the same time the oldest accessible cave in Slovakia.
