Turňa nad Bodvou (German Tornau , Hungarian Torna ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia near the border with Hungary , about 10 kilometers west of the city of Moldava nad Bodvou .
The place is at the eastern end of the Slovak Karst and marks the beginning of the Košická kotlina (Kosice Basin). The Bodva flows through the village and gives the name to the hill country Bodvianska pahorkatina , which runs south of the municipality , and the Turňa river flows into the Bodva here.
There is a strong Hungarian minority (around 44% in 2001) and a smaller Roma minority in the community . In 1991, more than 60% of the population stated Hungarian as their nationality, with a not insignificant part of the Roma minority, which was not recognized at the time.
history
The place was mentioned for the first time in 1198. Until 1881 the place was the seat of the historic Tornau County and was considered a city with a population of around 30,000 inhabitants in 1851.
Until 1918 the community belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . She came back to Hungary for a short time from 1938 to 1945 through the First Vienna Arbitration .
From 1920 to 1927 the place was officially called Turňa , from 1927 to 1990 Turna nad Bodvou (with an interruption during the renewed belonging to Hungary, then Torna ). From 1964 to 1990 he was with the municipality Háj in place Turnianska Nová Ves incorporated.
