Vyšný Klátov ( Hungarian Felsőtőkés ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia with 450 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Košice-okolie , a part of Košický kraj .

geography

The municipality of Vyšný Klátov is located about eight kilometers northwest of the city of Košice . The almost 18 km² square kilometer area includes a valley section of a side stream of the upper Myslavsky potok , a tributary of the Hornád, which opens to the southeast . The heights around Vyšný Klátov belong to the Volovec Mountains , the eastern foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains . In the north of the municipality the terrain rises and reaches the highest point in the Predné holisko at 949  m nm . The Myslavsky potok forms the southwestern boundary of the municipality, behind which a narrow, wooded ridge separates the area from the valley of the Ida , which flows here parallel to the Myslavsky potok to the southeast. Except for the south-east, the community area is covered by dense forests.

Neighboring communities of Vyšný Klátov are Košická Belá in the north, Košice in the east, Nižný Klátov in the south-east, Hýľov in the south-west and Zlatá Idka in the north-west.

history

The village of Vyšný Klátov was founded at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. The first written mention of the village in the form of Vyfolu sev nemutfolu comes from the year 1317. The predominantly German-speaking settlers called the village Superior or Ober-Beckseyffen . The first known owner of the village was a noble named Hannus . A later owner was the landlord of neighboring Baška and from 1382 Vyšný Klátov came under the influence of the city of Košice , which covered its enormous demand for wood here. Only from this point on are we talking about two different villages - Nižný Klátov and Vyšný Klátov. The dependence on Košice lasted until the 19th century. The Hungarian name Felsőtőkés is derived from Tőké (= tree stump ). Other spellings of the village in early history were Superior-Turas, Tukes, Fel-Teukes, Wisznia Tekuskeho, Wisnu Tokes and Vyšní Tejkeš .

As in other villages in the area, iron ore was found in Vyšný Klátov. The German colonists began working with iron as early as the 14th century. In the following centuries the population gradually shifted in favor of the Slovaks. In 1772 there were 68 houses with 519 inhabitants in Vyšný Klátov.

At the beginning of the 19th century there were almost exclusively Slovaks living in Vyšný Klátov, the officials of the gendarmerie, the military, financial, educational, tax and other administrative authorities were Hungarians. At the end of the 19th century, the poverty that prevailed in all of eastern Slovakia drove many residents out of the country - some to Hungary, some overseas. In 1828 the Roman Catholic Trinity Church and the Catholic School were built.

52 villagers were killed in the First World War. During the Great Depression, many residents again emigrated to America. After the First Vienna Arbitration , the village belonged as Felsőtőkés from 1938 to 1945 to the Hungarian Abaúj County .

The village has only been officially called Vyšný Klátov since 1948 .

In 1954 Vyšný Klátov was connected to the bus network, and in 1959 electrification took place. In 1964 the new village community center was built, and in 1969 the construction of a new parish began. In 1973 the communal water supply was built in the village. In the 1980s the roads were paved and in 1997 Vyšný Klátov was connected to the central gas supply.

population

According to the results of the census in 2001 there were 412 inhabitants in Vyšný Klátov, 99% of them Slovaks and a few 0.5 Hungarians and Roma. 95.15% of the residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture has been an important line of business in Vyšný Klátov for many generations - especially dairy farming and the cultivation of grain and animal feed. Some residents commute to the nearby city of Košice . The largest employer in the area, however, is a quarry west of the village, operated by the Krušgeo SK company. There is already an official permit for the quarry to be expanded tenfold by 2020; Only the way in which the rock is removed is unclear.

There is only one road that can be used all year round to and from Vyšný Klátov and connects the village with Nižný Klátov . The main road from Košice via Hýlov to Zlatá Idka runs through Nižný Klátov . There are regular bus connections to Košice; from there rail connections lead to all parts of the country.
