Today's municipality was created in 1961 through the merger of the four previously independent places Bernátovce , Buzice , Košťany and Všechsvätých . The first (indirect) written mention was made in 1248, when an older village called Kokšov was mentioned on the site of the present day . In the course of the 15th century, the village, which had existed as a unit until then, was divided into four places, but together they kept the dialectic name Valaliky . The four places in Abaúj-Torna County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918/1919 , then they came to the newly formed Czechoslovakia . Due to the First Vienna Arbitration , they were again part of Hungary from 1938 to 1945. The municipality has been part of Slovakia since 1993.

The only remaining sacred building is the late Baroque Church of All Saints from 1786.

The population has increased in recent years (1991 census: 3364; 2001 census: 3701; 2006 estimate: 3927 inhabitants). According to the 2001 census, of 3701 inhabitants, 94.84% were Slovaks, 3.86% Roma and others. 92.76% of the population professed to be part of the Roman Catholic Church.
