The Okres Košice-okolie ("Košice area") is an administrative unit in eastern Slovakia around Košice with 130,132 inhabitants (December 31, 2019, at the 2011 census there were 119,227 inhabitants, of which 88,287 (74.0%) Slovak, 11,845 (9.9%) Hungarian, 7,700 (6.5%) Roma). and an area of 1,541 km². The seat is in Košice, but the city itself does not belong to the Okres area.
Geographically, the central and southwestern part is in the Košická kotlina basin , while the northwest and extreme west are covered by sub-mountains of the Slovak Ore Mountains ( Čierna hora , Volovské vrchy and Slovak Karst ). The eastern border of the Okres runs along the Slanské vrchy Mountains . The largest river is the Hornád , which takes the Torysa southeast of Košice . Smaller rivers are the Oľšava in the east, Ida in the middle, and Bodva and Turňa in the west.
The largest city in the Okres is Moldava nad Bodvou with 11,307 inhabitants. Settlements near the city of Košice and along the main roads have a suburban character, further they are more rural. The economy is mainly based on the service sector, followed by construction, agriculture and forestry, industry and public administration (data as of 2010). There is only a larger industrial concentration in the Kechnec industrial park , but some companies are also closely linked to the U.S Steel Košice steelworks .
Historically, the district is largely in the former Abaúj-Torna county , a smaller part in the north is in the former Sáros county (see also the list of historical counties in Hungary ).
