Kostoľany nad Hornádom (until 1948 Slovak "Kostolany nad Hornádom" - to 1927 "Kostelany" or "Koscelany"; Hungarian Hernádszentistván - until 1907 Kosztolányszentistván ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,245 (December 31, 2019) that the Okres Košice-okolie , part of Košický kraj .

The village is located in the Hornád Valley at the transition from the Košická kotlina basin to the Slovak Ore Mountains , more precisely its lower part Čierna hora . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 259  m nm and is ten kilometers from Košice .

Neighboring municipalities are Družstevná pri Hornáde in the north and east, Košice (districts Ťahanovce , Sever and Kavečany ) in the south and south-west and Sokoľ in the north-west.

history

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1423 as Zenthestwan , four years later nine porta were recorded here . The village initially belonged to the estate of the nearby Sokoľ Castle, before the city of Kaschau became the new landlord in 1429 and remained so with brief interruptions until serfdom was abolished in 1848. In 1828 there were 82 houses and 622 inhabitants who worked in agriculture and as vegetable growers were busy. In the 20th century there was an artificial fertilizer factory here.

Until 1918/1919 the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1961 Kostoľany nad Hornádom was united with Malá Vieska and Teplica to form the new municipality Družstevná nad Hornádom, since January 1, 2003 the place has been independent again.

population

According to the 2011 census, there were 1,202 inhabitants in Kostoľany nad Hornádom, of which 1,106 were Slovaks, four Czechs, two Magyars and one each was a Jew, a Moravian, a Pole, a Roma and a Ukrainian; three residents were of a different ethnicity. 82 residents gave no information in this regard. 949 residents professed their support for the Roman Catholic Church, 26 residents for the Greek Catholic Church, 25 residents for the Evangelical Church AB, four residents for the Orthodox Church, two residents for the Reformed and one resident each for the Evangelical Methodist Church, the Jewish community and Czechoslovakian - Hussite Church; three residents professed a different denomination. 73 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 117 inhabitants was not determined.
