Háj (Hungarian Áj ) is a small municipality in eastern Slovakia with 275 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Košice-okolie , a part of Košický kraj .
geography
The 21.36 km² large community of Háj is located about 25 kilometers southwest of the city of Košice and about seven kilometers north of the Hungarian border. The municipality covers a section in the southeast of the Slovak Karst . The location of the village of Háj is exceptional. It slides in a wedge shape into the exit of a deep ravine that the Hájsky potok has washed into the calcareous subsoil. The gorge, up to 150 m deep, is narrow and flanked by steep, partially overhanging rock walls. The Hájsky potok rises in Hačava north of Háj and flows south of Háj after entering the Kaschau basin into the Turňa - shortly before its confluence with the Bodva . The entire area of the municipality is part of the Slovak Karst National Park .
To the east and west of the Hájsky potok gorge stretches the heavily forested high plateau of the Slovak Karst, the relief of which is interrupted by bizarre rock formations. The highest peaks in this part of the municipality are Bereš 577 m nm , Čertovosť 683 m nm and Šugovský vrch 705 m nm. A small part in the southeast of the municipality is located in the Turňa lowland, which is dominated by arable land.
Neighboring municipalities of Háj are Hačava in the north, Turňa nad Bodvou in the east and south, Zádiel in the south-west and Bôrka in the west.
history
The church in its present form is still relatively young. It emerged only in 1990 from the municipality Turnianska Nová Ves , which had existed since 1964 , when the large village Turňa nad Bodvou was detached from the municipality and has since been an independent municipality again.
Háj was first mentioned in a document in 1340 as Ay (Hungarian for valley or gorge ). Archaeological finds, however, indicate an early settlement of the area during the Bronze Age. The residents were subjects of the lords of the Tornau Castle ( Turniansky hrad ) in today's Turňa nad Bodvou . In 1567 there were six farms in the village; until the 18th century the population slowly declined. In 1828 - the Háj lords were a Keglevich family - the village already had 85 houses. At that time the residents mainly earned their livelihood by growing fruit or working in the surrounding limestone quarries. After the First Vienna Arbitration Award , Háj also belonged to the Hungarian Abaúj County from 1938 to 1945 .
population
According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 307 inhabitants in Háj, 85% Hungarians and 10% Slovaks. 69.4% of the residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church.
