Nováčany (Hungarian : Jászóújfalu ) is a municipality in eastern Slovakia with 769 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in Okres Košice-okolie , a part of Košický kraj .

geography

The municipality is located about 20 kilometers west of the city of Košice . The 17.32 km² large municipal area extends from the southeastern foothills of the Slovak Ore Mountains in the north over the fertile hills of the foothills to the edge of the Ida lowland as part of the Košická kotlina basin in the south. The mountainous northern half of the municipality, built on granite and porphyry, is covered by dense deciduous forests. Heights of over 500 m above sea level are reached here ( Holička , 727  m nm , Kobylianka , 669  m nm , Podkova , 569  m nm ), while the center of Nováčany is 337 m above sea level. Several mountain streams flow through the community area in a north-south direction, which flow together in Slany potok and Novačansky potok and drain over Šemšiansky potok to Ida.

Neighboring municipalities of Nováčany are Hýľov in the north, Hodkovce in the east, Paňovce in the south and Rudník in the west.

history

In 1323 Nováčany appeared for the first time in a document as belonging to the Abov region . The village soon became the property of a family from neighboring Šemša , who bequeathed it to the castellan of Spiš Castle . In 1328 Nováčany fell to King Charles I , who gave the village to a loyal military leader in the same year. Between 1334 and 1335, the first church, probably made of wood, was built in Nováčany. As of the end of the 15th century the village came into the sphere of influence of the Norbertine - monastery Jasov . The monastery archives show that in 1519 Nováčany belonged to Jan Tornala from the family of Count Šemšey. He received the rule from Spiš Count Jan Zápoľský , who later became Prince of Transylvania and a candidate for the Hungarian crown, for his services in the fight against the Turks. The son of January Tornala died in the fighting against the Turks, to which he bequeathed all his possessions to the monastery Jasov. In 1564 there were seven farms in Nováčany, in 1720 there were 13 houses, in 1772 there were 54 houses. Various historians and linguists assume that Nováčany was an almost entirely Slovak village from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The spelling of the village varied from Novaczany (1773) through Novoczany (1786) to Nováčany, which has been in use since 1927 .

The first village school was built in 1810, initially for 60 children.

In the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century Nováčany suffered several disasters:

  • 1868 - Drought and crop failure with subsequent famine
  • 1874 - Cholera epidemic with seven victims
  • 1870 - Conflagration with eleven houses burned
  • 1874 - another big fire
  • 1882 - after another bad harvest and hunger, 64 residents from Nováčany and the neighboring villages of Šemša and Hodkovce emigrated overseas
  • 1907 - on May 26th, a flood destroyed the entire harvest
  • 1909 - on June 29th, almost the entire village burned down - including the church, the rectory and the school

During the reconstruction, the traditional construction method (wooden houses with thatched roofs) was abandoned. The first stone-built house was the Materská škola, which still exists today . In 1936/37 a new two-class school was built instead of the old school that had burned down.

Until the Treaty of Trianon the village belonged to Abaúj-Torna County in the Kingdom of Hungary, from then on Hodkovce belonged to Czechoslovakia like all places in Abaúj-Torna County . After the First Vienna Arbitration , these communities were once again in Hungary from 1938 to 1945.

Almost 90% of the residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church.
