Road system in Slovakia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The road system in Slovakia is divided into several levels. At the highest point are the highways ( diaľnice ) and expressways ( rýchlostné cesty ), followed by the 1st order state roads ( cesty I. triedy ), regional roads under the Kraj administration, 2nd order roads ( cesty II. Triedy ) and roads 3rd order ( cesty III. Triedy ) and in the last place the various special and municipal roads.

Overview

According to the Slovak Road Administration ( Slovenská správa ciest , SSC), the total length of the road network as of January 1, 2015 is 43,905 km. A total of 17,963 km of this is on motorways, expressways and their feeders, as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd order roads. Local roads account for 25,942 km.

Speed limits

The maximum speed limit for cars on Slovakian motorways and expressways is 130 km / h (from February 1, 2009, it is possible to increase the speed limit on motorways up to 160 km / h). 100 km / h applies to buses and 90 km / h to trucks. The general speed limit on city motorways is 90 km / h. The lowest speed limit on motorways is 80 km / h and on city motorways 65 km / h.

The general maximum speed for all motor vehicles is set at 90 km / h on all country roads. 50 km / h applies in built-up areas.

Motorways and expressways

City motorway in Bratislava- Petržalka (D1)

The history of motorway construction in Slovakia begins in the late 1960s, i.e. at the time of the entire state of Czechoslovakia . Today the motorway network consists of four motorways, all marked with a "D" and a single-digit number ( D1 , D2 , D3 , D4 ); they are marked on a red plate with a white number. Currently (2014) around 420 km of the planned 700 km have been completed, many routes are still missing, especially in Central and Eastern Slovakia, as well as the majority of the planned Bratislava ring road.

The motorway network is supplemented by nine expressways, mainly in the southern part of the country. Five of these are only being planned. One example is the R1 expressway from Trnava to Banská Bystrica . In 2014 around 240 km of the expressways were completed.

The use of most stretches of the motorway and expressway network is chargeable and is paid for by a vignette for all vehicles with a GVW up to 3.5 t (except motorcycles). For trucks over 3.5 tonnes, the vignette system was replaced on January 1, 2010 by distance-dependent electronic tolls, which to a considerable extent also apply to first-order roads. The exact sections are laid down in regulations.

1st order streets

An example of the signage

The first-order roads are important for international and domestic traffic. They end at the state border or on a road of equal or greater importance (motorways, expressways and other state roads) and correspond to the federal highways in Germany and Austria or Strada Statale in Italy. As of January 1, 2014, there were 3,293 km of these roads.

They are marked as I / (street number) (with an additional letter if necessary) and marked on a blue sign with a white number. All but one have a two-digit number.

2nd order streets

The 2nd order roads roughly correspond to the state roads in Germany and have regional significance. As with the 1st order roads, they end at the state border or on a road of equal or greater importance. Together they have a length of 3616 km.

They are signposted in a similar way to the 1st order roads. Most of them are marked as II / 5xx, but there are six exceptions that start with the number 4.

3rd order streets

The 3rd order streets are only of local importance and serve to connect the communities with 1st or 2nd order streets. They begin as in the cases described above (same or higher meaning). In 2015 there were 10,369 km of this type of road. They are roughly equivalent to district roads in Germany.

Since May 1, 2015, the streets have been numbered according to scheme III / xxxx and should also be signposted. Depending on the approximate location, the first digit is different: in western Slovakia street numbers start with a 1, in central Slovakia with a 2 and in eastern Slovakia with a 3.

Until this scheme was introduced, they were marked as III / xxxxxx, but not marked. The first three digits designate the 1st or 2nd order street from which you branch off (e.g. III / 064073 branches off from I / 64).

European roads

The European roads are signposted like in other countries, i. H. white number on green sign. Examples of European roads in Slovakia are E 50 , E 65 and E 75 ; There are a total of 11 European highways, which run with a length of 1523 km within Slovakia. European roads are either motorways / expressways or first-order roads.

particularities

The cities of Bratislava and Košice represent a special case. The city administration of Bratislava (or city districts) manages all roads except motorways and expressways; the Košice City Administration manages the 2nd and 3rd order streets.
