Road system in Lithuania
The road system in Lithuania includes roads with a length of 21,328 km (2006).
Street categories
The following road categories are distinguished in the superordinate road network of Lithuania:
- Trunk roads
- European roads: The European roads in Lithuania are shown in the map.
- Highway-like roads:
- Magistralinis kelias A1 . The road between Kaunas and Klaipėda is built like a motorway, and between Vilnius and Kaunas as a four-lane expressway.
- Magistralinis kelias A2 . The road that leads from Klaipėda to Panevėžys is mostly built like a motorway.
- Main roads ( Automagistralė ; total length around 1,749 km). Besides the motorway-like A1 and A2 roads, the basic structure of the Lithuanian road network consists of the A3 to A16 roads. The streets with the numbers A17 to A21 are shorter bypasses or passages of the big cities and a bypass of the Russian city of Sovetsk on Lithuanian territory.
- National roads (krašto keliai). They have numbers from 101 to 233 and are marked in yellow with black numbers.
- Regional roads have numbers from 1001 to 5349.
The main roads are administered by the Lithuanian Road Administration ( Lietuvos automobilių kelių direkcija ). The state-owned company Kelių priežiūra is responsible for building and maintaining the higher-level road network in Lithuania .
A road toll has not yet been levied in Lithuania.
