Road maintenance

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The collective term road maintenance is used to summarize measures that contribute to maintaining the performance, traffic safety and structural substance of roads and paths as well as the areas and structures attached to them, despite the constant impact of traffic and the climate . The renovation and expansion of roads and paths as well as their new construction are not part of road maintenance.

Many road construction authorities operate systematic maintenance planning in order to be able to use the available financial resources as optimally and purposefully as possible. Special computing programs (so-called pavement management systems ) serve as a tool for this purpose , which can predict the development of the condition and propose maintenance programs on the basis of a regularly carried out condition recording and assessment of the road stock as well as further input data.

A basic distinction is made between operational and structural road maintenance. The main task of company road maintenance is to remove sources of danger. In the case of structural road maintenance, on the other hand, the focus is on improving the quality of the structural substance.

Company road maintenance includes regular road checks and road maintenance (also known as company road maintenance). In addition to taking immediate action on the road surface (such as mending a pothole ), the latter also includes, for example, winter service , maintenance of greenery and trees , street cleaning and maintenance of the street equipment .

Structural road maintenance is divided into road maintenance (also called structural road maintenance), road maintenance and road renewal . Road maintenance only includes minor structural measures with little quality improvement. In the case of road repairs, on the other hand, the maintenance measure extends to larger areas with, in some cases, considerable improvements in quality. If, on the other hand, measures are taken that amount to a new construction of the road pavement, one speaks of a renewal.
