The road branches off the A4 Magistralinis kelias highway in the southwest of the capital Vilnius in the suburb of Trakų Vokė and leads via Trakai , Aukštadvaris , Birštonas and Prienai to Marijampolė on the Šešupė (shed), where the Magistralinis kelias A5 (also European route 67 ) crosses . The continuation of the Magistralinis kelias A16 westwards to the border with the Russian exclave Kaliningrad forms the trunk road Magistralinis kelias A7 .
The length of the road is around 138 km.
