course
Coming from Riga and continuing the Latvian Autoceļš A8 , the road enters Lithuanian territory north of Joniškis and continues in a south-westerly direction via Šiauliai (Schaulen), crosses the Magistralinis kelias A1 highway at Kryžkalnis ( European route 85 ) and continues via Tauragė ( Tauroggen) to the Lithuanian-Russian border on the Memel River near Pagėgiai across from the now Russian city of Sovetsk (Tilsit until 1945). The road connects the Lithuanian and Russian banks via the Queen Luise Bridge, originally from Prussian times, rebuilt in the 1960s with the inclusion of the old bridge portal . Since the eastern bypass of Sovetsk ( Magistralinis kelias A21 ) was opened in 2014, this bridge has only been passable for pedestrians. The A216 road continues on Russian territory ( Kaliningrad Oblast ) .
The length of the road in Lithuanian territory is around 186 km. It is located in the municipalities: joniškis district municipality , Šiauliai District Municipality , Municipality of Siauliai , kelmė district municipality , tauragė district municipality and pagėgiai municipality .
