Rajongemeinde of the same name in northern Lithuania . The district of Joniškis within the municipality includes the town with 10,823 inhabitants and other places with a total of over 1000 inhabitants. A total of 30,418 people live in the community.
Joniškis (Polish Janiszki , German Jonischken ) is a town and seat of thecity
The city is only a few kilometers from the Latvian border on the railway line and main road Šiauliai - Riga . The bypass was completed in 2005, so that the (low) transit traffic to Latvia no longer crosses the city.
The place was first mentioned in 1523 and received city rights in 1616.
The film and stage actor Laurence Harvey (1928–1973) was born here.
Since November 10, 2000 there has been a twinning with the city of Sulingen in Germany.
Joniškis was one of the applicants for the 2015 cultural capital of Lithuania .
