The Šiauliai district (German Schaulen district ) is one of the ten administrative districts that have formed the top tier of the administrative division of Lithuania since 1994 . Until June 30, 2010 there was a district administration.
Administrative division
The Šiauliai district comprises seven of the 60 - still existing - self-governing communities ( savivaldybės ), which are larger than German communities and smaller than German "rural districts". In Šiauliai district there is one 'township' and six ' rajono savivaldybės ' , which are made up of smaller towns and villages:
