Autoceļš A8 is a "State Main Road" ( lett . Valsts galvenie A utoceļi ) belonging to Latvia's state roads . It connects the capital Riga with the Lithuanian border near Meitene , where it continues as Magistralinis kelias A12 . The A8 is part of the European route 77 . The total length is 76 kilometers. The average traffic volume was 10,293 vehicles per day in 2010.
In 2011, the A8 at Jelgava was expanded like a motorway, the other sections were available with two lanes or as an alternating three-lane road . In 2011 work began on modernizing the A8 in two sections. The first section comprises a lane between the 10th and 19th kilometers and is to be completed by 2014 [obsolete] . The second section comprises the other, left-hand lane from 19th to 30th kilometers and is to be completed by 2013 [obsolete] . In October, the modernization of a third section began, which includes both lanes from 32 to 43 kilometers. The modernization should last until the end of 2014 [obsolete] . The investment costs 4.59 million lati .
According to the plans, the remaining sections of the A8 are to be modernized by 2020 and signposted as a motorway or motorway-like road.
