List of trunk roads in Lithuania

The A1 near Kaunas

The highway network in Lithuania has a continuous numbering from A1 to A21, which does not distinguish between motorways and country roads . However, the signs are different. While the routes that have been expanded to form the motorway are signposted in green, other highways, including motorways, have blue signs. The two currently existing motorway routes ( Lithuanian singular automagistralė ) the A1 (Kaunas - Klaipėda) and A2 (Vilnius - Panevėžys) were built in the 1980s , i.e. still at the time of the LiSSR , and originally corresponded to the standard of two-lane country roads. So they had turning points, so-called U-turns , and bus stops on the hard shoulder at numerous junctions . However, both routes were modernized after regaining independence and adapted to the current motorway standard. It is planned to expand further trunk roads into motorways.

The state enterprise Kelių priežiūra is responsible for the construction and maintenance of the Lithuanian trunk road network as well as the national and regional road network .

In the case of the A1, there is one special feature to note: this route is called automagistralė along its full length and has four lanes throughout. Signposted as a motorway (green signposts, in contrast to blue signposts on country roads), however, it is only between Kaunas and Klaipėda. The Vilnius - Kaunas section is signposted as a motor road (traffic sign: white car on a blue background) and is therefore legally a four-lane expressway (Lithuanian singular magistralinis kelias , plural magistraliniai keliai ). The expansion of the junctions and the upgrading of the section to the motorway are planned. While the speed limit on Lithuanian motorways is 130 km / h, the speed limit is 110 km / h on expressways and only 90 km / h on country roads.

Planned routes

The plan is to upgrade the A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas to a motorway and the A5 from the Polish border via Kalvarija and Marijampolė to Kaunas on the Via Baltica (European route 67), which crosses Lithuania from south to north.

This expansion plan also includes the A8 , which connects Sitkūnai (near Kaunas) via Aristava with Panevėžys , as well as the A17 (Panevėžys bypass) and the A10 from Panevėžys via Pasvalys and Saločiai to the Latvian border.

In addition, the A13 from Klaipėda to Palanga (in some cases already a four-lane country road today) and the A18 ( Šiauliai bypass ) are to be expanded into a motorway.
