Not far from the village are the ruins of the Medininkai Castle. It was first mentioned in 1392 and, unlike the majority of Lithuanian castles, is built of stone and brick. Inside the rectangular walling there were initially wooden houses, but they were destroyed in an attack by the Teutonic Order in 1404 . The residential and utility buildings erected afterwards have since been lost again.

With the increasing penetration power of cannons, the defensive value of the system declined. The castle became a palace and a preferred residence of the Lithuanian Grand Duke and Polish King Casimir IV Andrew (1427–1492). From the 16th century to the Second World War it was the seat of several noble families: Gasztołd, Ogiński, Grabowski, Drohojowski.

On July 31, 1991 around five o'clock, the border station, which was illegal from a Soviet and international point of view, was attacked by a Soviet OMON commando from Riga . Seven Lithuanian border guards were shot dead.

With the recognition of Lithuanian independence by the Soviet Union on September 6, 1991, the controls of Soviet officials on the former external border of the Union did not end. The Lazdijai - Sejny border crossing between Lithuania and Poland was checked jointly by Soviet and Lithuanian officials on September 20.
