Šalčininkai ( Polish Soleczniki , German Sasse nod ) is a city and seat of the same name Rajongemeinde in southeastern Lithuania . It lies on the border with Belarus in the Dzūkija region . The city and its surroundings are characterized by a multiethnic population that includes Poles , Russians , Lithuanians , Belarusians and Roma . More than 70% of the population are ethnic Poles. The city is located in a wooded area.

The city has around 6,400 inhabitants and is located on the trunk road and the railway line from Vilnius to Lida . The first known mention of the place comes from the chronicle of Peter von Dusburg from the year 1311. The name of the place derives from that of the river Šalčia .
