Baloži (German Rollbusch ) is a city in Latvia , which is twelve kilometers south of the city center of Riga .
The city lies in a swampy area that was still forested until the Second World War . The place name comes from a forestry department at that time .
history
In 1947 the Baloži peat factory was founded, around which workers' settlements soon formed. In 1974 the local area was enlarged considerably. On the road from Riga to Bauska, the new district of Titurga was built as a workers' settlement for the building crew of the kolkhoz of neighboring Ķekava. In 1991 Baloži was granted town charter.
Despite public protests, the city became part of the Ķekava district ( Ķekavas novads ) in 2009 as part of an administrative reform .
