history
In 1945 the (rural) district of Pogegen , which existed until 1939, was initially continued unchanged as the district of Pagėgiai ( Pagėgių apskritis ). In 1947, the two eastern administrative districts (valsčius) Viešvilė and Smalininkai were merged and given to the Jurbarkas District (Jurbarko apskritis). In 1950, according to Russian terminology, the circle was transformed into a Rajon . As a result, the raion was divided into 27 circles ( apylinkė ). In this case, a small strip of territory from the circle was Tauragė (Tauragės apskritis) the Rayon Pagėgiai added (the circle Margiškiai , Sartininkai and Trumpininkai ), but which in the year 1962 in the Rayon Tauragė returned dissolved as the Rayon Pagėgiai and mostly to the Rayon Šilutė connected has been. The Lauksargiai district was also connected to the Tauragė district.
The municipality of Pagėgiai ( Pagėgių savivaldybė ) can be regarded as the successor to this district , which was separated (again) from the district of Šilutė in 1999. The current administrative districts Katyčiai and Usėnai remained with the Rajongemeinde Šilutė.
In 2001 there were 12,208 inhabitants.
