The district municipality of Alytus (Lithuanian: Alytaus rajono savivaldybė ) in Lithuania encloses the municipality of Alytus in the district of Alytus . The city of Alytus is also its administrative center. It is centrally located in the south of the country in the historical region of Dzūkija .
It is traversed from south to north by the Nyemen (Memel). To the west of the river, the landscape is rich in natural lakes. This is an eastern continuation of the Masurian and Białystok Lake Districts. As early as 1989, the population was 97% Lithuanians.
