biography
Joe Crowley was the son of an Irish-American father and a Catholic immigrant from County Armagh ( Northern Ireland born) in New York City. He attended a Roman Catholic private school in New York City. He graduated from high school at the Power Memorial Academy, also located in New York . He graduated from Queens College with a degree in Political Science . He then worked as a political assistant. He became a member of the Democratic Party and was elected to the New York State Assembly at the age of 24 , which he was a member until his election to the US House of Representatives.
As the successor to Thomas J. Manton , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 7th congressional electoral district of New York State, which was composed of parts of Queens and the Bronx . He was re-elected in all elections up to and including 2016. After the redesign of the constituencies in 2012 as a result of the United States Census 2010 , he represented the geographically corresponding 14th constituency of his home state in Congress. Crowley was a member of the Committee on Ways and Means and two of its subcommittees and the Foreign Affairs Committee . As chairman of the House Democratic Caucus , he was fourth in the hierarchy of party leadership in the House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019 .
In the Democratic primary election for the seat in June 2018, Crowley, who is considered politically moderate, was surprisingly defeated by the 28-year-old left activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez . The constituency is believed to be safe for the Democrats. His defeat has been compared to Eric Cantor's 2014 defeat and has been perceived as a sign of Democratic dissatisfaction with their aging House leadership. His mandate ended on January 3, 2019.
Crowley is a Catholic and lives in Queens with his wife Kasey and three daughters.
