John Gebhard

John Gebhard (born February 22, 1782 in Claverack , New York , † January 3, 1854 in Schoharie , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1821 and 1823 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Gebhard was born and raised in Claverack during the War of Independence . During this time he attended public schools. He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began to practice. Between 1811 and 1813 and between 1815 and 1822 he was a guardianship and probate judge ( surrogate ) in Schoharie County . Politically he belonged to the Federalist Party .

In the congressional elections of 1820 for the 17th Congress , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded Harmanus Peek on March 4, 1821 . He retired from the after March 3, 1823 Congress of.

After his time at Congress, he worked as a lawyer again. He died on January 3, 1854 in Schoharie and was buried in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery .
