17th United States Congress
The 17th Congress of the United States , consisting of the House and Senate , was the legislature of the United States . Its legislative period lasted from March 4, 1821 to March 4, 1823. All members of the House of Representatives and a third of the senators ( Class I ) were elected in the 1820 congressional elections. This resulted in a majority for the Democratic Republican Party in both chambers . The congress met in the American capital Washington, DC At that time the United States consisted of 23 states. During the legislature came up with Missourithe 24th state added. President was James Monroe . The distribution of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the 1810 census .

- March 4, 1821: Beginning of the legislative period of the 17th Congress. At the same time, President Monroe will begin his second term.
- July 10, 1821: The United States takes possession of the Spanish colony of Florida, acquired in 1819 .
- August 10, 1821: Missouri becomes the 24th state of the USA.
- March 30, 1822: Florida Territory is established .
- 1822: In the congressional elections, the Democratic Republican Party defends its majorities in both chambers.
