George Holcombe

George Holcombe (born March 1786 in West Amwell , Hunterdon County , New Jersey , †  January 14, 1828 in Allentown , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1828 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Holcombe attended the public schools in his home country and then studied at Princeton College until 1805 . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and in Trenton , he began to work in Allentown in 1808 in his new profession. He practiced there until 1815 and also held various local offices. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1815 and 1816 he was a member of the Democratic Republican Party in the New Jersey General Assembly .

In the congressional election of 1820 , Holcombe was elected for the third seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Bernard Smith on March 4, 1821 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 14, 1828 . In the 1820s, Holcombe joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson . In Congress, he saw the violent clashes between the supporters and the Jacksons from about 1825.

George Holcombe was buried in the Congress Cemetery in the federal capital Washington.
