John LN Stratton

John Leake Newbold Stratton (born November 27, 1817 in Mount Holly , Burlington County , New Jersey , †  May 17, 1889 there ) was an American politician . Between 1859 and 1863 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Stratton attended private schools in his home country and then studied at Princeton College . After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1858 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded George R. Robbins on March 4, 1859 . After being re-elected, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1863 . These had been shaped by the events of the civil war since 1861 .

In 1862 Stratton declined to run again; four years later he was a delegate to the Union National Convention of Conservatives in Philadelphia . In 1875 he became president of the Farmers' National Bank of Mount Holly . He died on May 17, 1889 in his native Mount Holly.
