James J. Howard

James John Howard (born July 24, 1927 in Irvington , New Jersey , †  March 25, 1988 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1965 and 1988 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Howard attended St. Rose School in Belmar until 1941 . Between 1944 and 1946 he served in the United States Navy in the Pacific region during World War II . He then graduated from Asbury Park High School in 1947 . He then studied until 1952 at St. Bonaventure University in Olean ( New York ) the subject of education. In 1958, Howard graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick . Since 1952 he has worked as a teacher. He continued this activity until 1964.

Politically, Howard joined the Democratic Party . In the 1964 congressional elections , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington in the third constituency of New Jersey, where he succeeded James C. Auchincloss on January 3, 1965 . After eleven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on March 25, 1988 . During this time, among other things, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate affair fell . From 1981, James Howard was chairman of the Committee on Public Works and Transportation . After his death, his mandate fell to Frank Pallone .
