Rebecca Michelle "Mikie" Sherrill (born January 19, 1972 in Alexandria , Virginia , United States ) is an American politician , former helicopter pilot in the United States Navy and a member of the United States Attorney . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the eleventh seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States' House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Mikie Sherrill was born on January 19, 1972 in Alexandria, Virginia , and grew up in various locations along the east coast of the United States because of her father's work .

Sherrill visited the High School in Reston . In 1994 she graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science . In 2003 she received a Master of Science degree in economic history from the London School of Economics and Political Science . In 2004 she received a certificate in Arabic from the American University in Cairo . In 2007 Sherrill earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center .

Military career

Sherrill graduated from the first flight school that trained women eligible for combat. In 1994 Sherrill became a helicopter pilot of the Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King . She flew missions in Europe and the Middle East . In 2000 she was stationed at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi . In 2003 Sherrill was raised to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and left the Navy.

Political career

Mikie Sherrill won the Democratic primary election for the second seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives with 77.4 percent of the vote against Tamara Harris, who got 14.5 percent.

She won the election for the second seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018 against Jay Webber of the Republican Party with 56.8 percent of the vote. Third place went to Robert Crook with 0.7 percent of the vote.
