Tomasz "Tom" P. Malinowski (born September 23, 1965 in Słupsk , Poland ) is a Polish -American diplomat and politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , he has held the seventh seat of the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Malinowski lived in Brwinów until he was six years old . He emigrated to the United States with his mother Joanna, where she married the journalist and political activist Blair Clark . He grew up in Princeton , New Jersey and graduated from Princeton High School in 1983 , where he wrote for the school magazine The Tower . He did an internship with politician Bill Bradley . In 1987, he received his Bachelor's in political science at the University of California, Berkeley , and in 1991 the Master of Philosophy at the University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes scholarship had received.

Political career

Malinowski's political career began in 1988 when he was assistant to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan . After studying at Oxford, he worked for the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna ( Austria ) and then as a research assistant for the Ford Foundation . From 1994 to 1998, Malinowski was the speechwriter for Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright and worked for the United States Department of State . From 1998 to 2001 he served as a superior on the United States National Security Council at the White House , where he oversaw the writing of Bill Clinton's foreign policy speeches .

Human Rights Watch

Malinowski was the Washington director of Human Rights Watch from 2001 to 2013 . In this office he worked to end torture and the black sites caused by the war on terror . He campaigned for democratization in Myanmar and financial sanctions for its government.

Malinowski argued for improved women's rights under the Taliban as a prerequisite for peace talks with the Taliban . He also spoke out in favor of a no-fly zone in Syria due to the civil war there since 2011 .

Assistant Secretary of State

On July 8, 2013, Malinowski was nominated to succeed Michael Posner as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under President Barack Obama . He was confirmed in this office on April 2, 2014. He held this position until the end of Obama's presidency on January 20, 2017.

United States House of Representatives

Tom Malinowski won the Democratic primary election for the seventh seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives with 66.8 percent of the vote against Peter Jacob, who got 19.1 percent.

He won the election for the seventh seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018, against electorate Leonard Lance of the Republican Party with 63.8 percent of the vote. Third place went to Diane Moxley from the Green Party with 0.8 percent of the vote. Malinowski is a member of the New Democrat Coalition .
