John H. Pugh

John Howard Pugh (born June 23, 1827 in Unionville , Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  April 30, 1905 in Burlington , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Pugh attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Friends School in Westtown . In 1847 he worked as a teacher in Marietta . After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1852, he began to work in Bristol in this profession. In 1854 he moved his residence and medical practice to Burlington, New Jersey. During the Civil War , he was a doctor in a Union Army military hospital in Beverly . In doing so, he waived his salary. Pugh also worked in the banking sector and was President of Mechanics' National Bank of Burlington for 36 years .

Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional election of 1876 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Samuel A. Dobbins on March 4, 1877 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Hezekiah Bradley Smith in 1878 , he was only able to serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Pugh practiced as a doctor again. He was also a member of the New Jersey State Education Committee. He died on April 30, 1905 in Burlington, where he was also buried.
