Isaac Smith (* 1740 in Trenton , Province of New Jersey , † August 29, 1807 there ) was an American politician . Between 1795 and 1797 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Isaac Smith grew up during the British colonial era and attended Princeton College until 1755 . From 1755 to 1758, despite his youth, he was a teacher at this college. After a subsequent medical degree and his license as a doctor, he began to work in Trenton in this profession. Smith joined the American Revolution in the 1770s and was Colonel in the Hunterdon County militia between 1776 and 1777 . From 1777 to 1804, also during his time as Congressman, he was a judge on the New Jersey Supreme Court .

In the late 1790s he joined the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . In the New Jersey state-wide congressional election of 1794 , Smith was elected for the fifth mandate of his state in the US House of Representatives, where he succeeded Lambert Cadwalader on March 4, 1795 . Until March 3, 1797 he could only serve one term in Congress . In 1797 he was appointed negotiator with the Seneca Indians by outgoing President George Washington . Smith was also active in the banking industry and was President of Trenton Banking Co. from 1805. He died on August 29, 1807 in Trenton, where he was also buried.
