Jefferson "Jeff" H. Van Drew (* 23. February 1953 in New York City ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . As a member of the Democratic Party , he has held the second seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . He was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019. On December 19, 2019, at a press conference with US President Donald Trump , Van Drew made his move to the Republican Party public.

Life

Jeff Van Drew grew up in New York City. He attained at the Rutgers University the Bachelor of Science and at the Fairleigh Dickinson University a doctorate of dentistry .

Political career

Jeff Van Drew served on the 1991 Dennis Township Committee in Cape May County . From 1994 to 1995 and from 1997 to 2003 he was Mayor of Dennis Township. From 1995 to 1997 he was on the Board of Chosen Freeholders in Cape May County. From January 8, 2002 to January 8, 2008 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly for the first district and served in the New Jersey Senate from then until December 31, 2018 .

Van Drew won the Democratic primary election for New Jersey's second seat in the United States House of Representatives with 57 percent of the vote against Tanzie Youngblood, who got 18.5 percent.

On November 6, 2018, he won the election for the second seat of the state of New Jersey in the United States House of Representatives against Seth Grossman ( Republican Party ) with 62.9 percent of the vote. John Ordille of the Libertarian Party received 0.7 percent of the vote.

In the House of Representatives, Jeff Van Drew serves on the Agriculture and Natural Resources Committees. He was one of two Democratic MPs who voted against impeachment proceedings against US President Trump in December 2019 .
