Thomas Charles "Tom" MacArthur (born October 16, 1960 in Hebron , Connecticut ) is an American politician . Since January 2015 he has represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Tom MacArthur attended RHAM High School in Hebron until 1978 . He then studied at Hofstra University in Hempstead , New York State, until 1982 . He then worked in the insurance industry. For eleven years he headed the York Risk Services Group, which is active in this branch . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . From 2011 to 2013 he served on the Randolph Township Council in New Jersey. In 2012 he was first deputy mayor and then from 2013 to 2014 full-time mayor.

In the 2014 congressional election , MacArthur was elected to the US House of Representatives in New Jersey's third constituency in Washington, DC , where on January 3, 2015, he succeeded Jon Runyan , who was no longer running. He won with 54:44 percent of the vote against the Democrat Aimee Belgard. Since he was confirmed in office in 2016, he is also a member of the 115th Congress of the United States , which met on January 3, 2017 .

MacArthur was one of the leaders of the centrist Tuesday Group within the Republican parliamentary group in the House of Representatives and is considered one of the key players in the conception of the Republican counter-draft of the House of Representatives to Obamacare . After the highly controversial draft was adopted in this Congress Chamber on May 4, 2017, MacArthur resigned at the end of May from his leadership position in the Tuesday Group, which he described as highly divided.
