Samuel Fowler (politician, 1851)
Samuel Fowler (born March 22, 1851 in Port Jervis , Orange County , New York , † March 17, 1919 in Newark , New Jersey ) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1893 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Samuel Fowler was the son of Colonel Samuel Fowler (1818–1863) and a grandson of Congressman Samuel Fowler . The younger Fowler attended Newton Academy and then studied at Princeton College . After a subsequent law degree at Columbia Law School in New York City and his admission as a lawyer in 1873, he began to work in Newark in 1876 in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the congressional election of 1888 Fowler was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fourth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded James N. Pidcock on March 4, 1889 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1893 . From 1891 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with the merchant marine and fisheries. In 1892, Samuel Fowler declined to run again for Congress. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer in Ogdensburg . He died in Newark on March 17, 1919.
