Cornelius Edward Gallagher (born March 2, 1921 in Bayonne , New Jersey - † October 17, 2018 in Monroe Township , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1973 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cornelius Gallagher attended the public schools in his homeland. He then interrupted his training to take part in the Second World War as a soldier in the United States Army between 1941 and 1946 . He served, among other things, as a captain under General George S. Patton . He was a faculty member at Rutgers University in 1945 and 1946 . After studying law at the John Marshall Law School and being admitted to the bar in 1949, he began to work in this profession in Bayonne. In the meantime he studied at New York University in 1948 and 1949 . During the Korean War , he served another year in the US Army. He later became a director of Broadway National Bank .

Politically, Gallagher joined the Democratic Party . Between 1953 and 1956 he was a member of the Hudson County County Council . He then became head of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority . In 1952, 1956 and 1960 he took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions . In the 1958 congressional elections , Gallagher was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Alfred D. Sieminski on January 3, 1959 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . This period was overshadowed by the events of the Cold War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement .

In 1972 Gallagher was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. Soon after, he was implicated in illegal activities and Mafia relationships. After a trial, he was to two years in prison and a fine of 10,000 dollars condemned. His political career was over. He later served as Vice President of Baron / Canning International in New York City . He spent his old age in Columbia .
