Bernard Smith (politician)

Bernard Smith (born July 5, 1776 in Morristown , New Jersey , †  July 16, 1835 in Little Rock , Arkansas Territory ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1821 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bernard Smith attended public schools in his home country. In 1809 and 1810 he worked for the customs authorities. He was then from 1810 to 1819 post office owner in New Brunswick . Politically, Smith was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1818 he was elected for the third seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Benjamin Bennet on March 4, 1819 . Since he refused to run again in 1820, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1821 .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Bernard Smith moved to Little Rock, Arkansas , where he worked for the land registry in 1821. Between 1825 and 1828 he was Secretary to Territorial Governor George Izard . In 1825 he also became an Indian agent with the Quapaw . He held this post until his death on July 16, 1835 in Little Rock.
