Rush D. Holt

Rush Dew Holt Jr. (born October 15, 1948 in Weston , West Virginia ) is an American politician . From 1999 to 2015 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Rush Holt is the son of US Senator Rush D. Holt Sr. (1905–1955) from West Virginia. He attended the Landon School in Bethesda ( Maryland ) until 1966 . He then studied physics at Carleton College in Minnesota until 1970 . He then went to New York University , where he studied philosophy until 1981. From 1980 to 1988 he was on the faculty of Swarthmore College . He then worked for the US State Department until 1989 , where he worked in the Nuclear and Scientific Division . Between 1989 and his election to the US House of Representatives, he was Deputy Director at Princeton University in the Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Politically, Holt joined the Democratic Party . In the 1998 congressional elections he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Michael J. Pappas on January 3, 1999 . After seven re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate until January 3, 2015. In 2010, contrary to the national trend, he was confirmed as a Democrat with 53% of the vote. Holt was considered a liberal MP and was a member of the Committee on Education and Labor and the Committee on Natural Resources, as well as four sub-committees. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In 2014 he did not stand for re-election.

Rush Holt is married and has three children. The family lives in Hopewell .
