T. James Tumulty

Thomas James Tumulty (born March 2, 1913 in Jersey City , New Jersey , †  November 23, 1981 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1955 and 1957 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Tumulty first attended Xavier High School and then Holy Cross University . He then studied until 1935 at Fordham University in New York City and until 1938 at Seton Hall University in South Orange . After studying law at the John Marshall Law School in Jersey City and being admitted to the bar in 1940, he began working in this profession in Jersey City. In 1940 and 1941 he taught himself at Seton Hall University.

During World War II , Tumulty served in the United States Army in 1943 and 1944 . He then began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1944 to 1952 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly . There he was the Democratic parliamentary group leader in 1951. In the meantime, he taught from 1949 to 1950 at a high school in Jersey City. From 1943 to 1954, Tumulty was also one of the city's legal advisors. He was Secretary to the Mayor of Jersey City in 1952 and 1953. In July 1952 he took part as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where Adlai Stevenson was nominated for the first time as a presidential candidate.

In the 1954 congressional election , Tumulty was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Edward J. Hart on January 3, 1955 . Since he was not confirmed in 1956, he could only complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1957 . This was shaped by the events of the civil rights movement and the Cold War .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Thomas Tumulty worked as an urban regeneration consultant for New Jersey. From 1958 to 1960 he was the deputy mayor of his hometown Jersey City. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1967 to 1972 he was a judge on the New Jersey Superior Court . He died in Jersey City on November 23, 1981.
