Thomas Baldwin Peddie (born February 11, 1808 in Edinburgh , Scotland , †  February 16, 1889 in Newark , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Peddie attended public schools in his Scottish homeland. In 1833 he came to the United States, where he settled in Newark. In his new home he made travel bags and sportswear. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1864 and 1865 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; from 1866 to 1869 he served as mayor of Newark. In 1873 he headed the city's trade committee.

In the congressional elections of 1876 Peddie was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Frederick Halstead Teese on March 4, 1877 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1878, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Peddie resumed his previous activities. He also worked in the banking industry. He was vice president of Essex County National Bank and president of the Security Savings Bank of Newark . Thomas Peddie died in Newark on February 16, 1889.
