J. Hart Brewer

John Hart Brewer (born March 29, 1844 in Hunterdon County , New Jersey , †  December 21, 1900 in Trenton , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1885 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

J. Hart Brewer was a descendant of John Hart , who was a delegate to the Continental Congress and a signatory of the United States Declaration of Independence . He attended Lawrenceville public schools and the Trenton Academy . He then studied until 1862 at the Delaware Literary Institution in Franklin ( New York ). In 1865, Brewer moved to Trenton, where he made pottery. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1876 he became a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; from 1879 he acted as chairman of the national association of ceramic manufacturers.

In the congressional election of 1880 Brewer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Hezekiah Bradley Smith on March 4, 1881 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1885 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Brewer worked again in the ceramics industry until 1895. Then he got into the insurance business. He also became an official appraiser of merchandise in the New York harbor . He died on December 21, 1900 in Trenton, where he was also buried.
