Charles D. Beckwith

Charles Dyer Beckwith (born October 22, 1838 in Coveville , Saratoga County , New York , †  March 27, 1921 in Chatham Center , Columbia County , New York) was an American politician . Between 1889 and 1891 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Charles Beckwith attended private schools in Troy , Philadelphia and Worcester ( Massachusetts ). He then graduated from a military school in New Haven ( Connecticut ). In 1860 he moved to Paterson , New Jersey, where he worked in the iron industry. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1882 he became a councilor in Paterson; from 1885 to 1889 he was mayor there.

In the congressional election of 1888 Beckwith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded William Walter Phelps on March 4, 1889 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Cornelius A. Cadmus in 1890 , he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1891 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, Beckwith resumed his previous activities. He later returned to New York State, where he settled on a farm near Chatham. He died on March 27, 1921.
