Cornelius Augustine McGlennon (born December 10, 1878 in East Newark , New Jersey , †  June 13, 1931 in Newark , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1921 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Cornelius McGlennon attended Holy Cross School in Harrison and St. Francis Xavier's High School in New York City . He then studied at Seton Hall College in South Orange until 1899 . Between 1901 and 1926 McGlennon was active as a school principal in addition to his other fields of work. After studying law at the New Jersey Law School in Newark and being admitted to the bar in 1916, he began working in this profession in East Newark. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1917 and 1918, McGlennon was a member of the New Jersey Senate , where he headed the Democratic Group in 1918. He also served as Mayor of East Newark between 1907 and 1919.

In the 1918 congressional election , McGlennon was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Edward W. Gray on March 4, 1919 . Since he was not confirmed in 1920, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1921 . During this time the 18th and 19th amendments were ratified.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, McGlennon initially practiced as a lawyer again. He was an appellate judge from 1924 until his death. He was also a school councilor in Harrison between 1926 and 1931. In 1920 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco , where James M. Cox was nominated as a presidential candidate. Cornelius McGlennon died in Newark on June 13, 1931 and was buried in East Orange.
