George Sykes

George Sykes (born September 20, 1802 in Sykesville , Burlington County , New Jersey , †  February 25, 1880 in Columbia , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1843 and 1847 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives twice .

Career

George Sykes attended private schools and then worked in land surveying and as a real estate agent. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1842 Sykes was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the second constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded John Bancker Aycrigg on March 4, 1843 . Until March 3, 1845, he was initially able to complete a legislative period in Congress . Then Samuel G. Wright was elected to succeed him by the Whig Party . After his death on July 30, 1845, Sykes prevailed in the due by-election, whereupon he ended the legislative period between November 4, 1845 and March 3, 1847. This time was marked by the events of the Mexican-American War .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, George Sykes resumed his previous activities. He became a member of the Council of Properties . Sykes was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly between 1877 and 1879 . He died near Columbia on February 25, 1880.
