Leonard Lance (born June 25, 1952 in Easton , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . Since 2009 he has represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Leonard Lance attended North Hunterdon Regional High School in Annandale, New Jersey , until 1970 . He then studied at Lehigh University in Bethlehem (Pennsylvania) until 1974 . After completing a law degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville ( Tennessee ) and being admitted to the bar in 1977, he began to work in this profession. He also studied at Princeton University until 1982 . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party .

Between 1991 and 2002 Lance was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly ; from 2002 to 2009 he was a member of the State Senate . There he headed the Republican parliamentary group between 2004 and 2008. In 1996 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. In the 2008 congressional election , Lance was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Mike Ferguson on January 3, 2009 . After four re-elections so far in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. Its current legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018. Lance is or was a member of the Committee on Energy and Trade and three of its sub-committees. In the social policy area he is considered to be rather conservative; But he is also committed to environmental protection and was, for example, one of only eight Republican MPs who voted for the Clean Energy and Security Act in 2009 .

Leonard Lance is married and lives privately in Clinton , northwest New Jersey.
