James Cox (politician)

James Cox (born June 14, 1753 in Monmouth County , Province of New Jersey , †  September 12, 1810 ibid) was an American politician . In 1801 and 1810 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Cox attended public schools in his home country. At the beginning of the American Revolution he joined this movement. During the Revolutionary War he was in command of a unit in the New Jersey militia. He took part in the battles of Germantown and Monmouth . After the war he stayed with the state militia and rose to brigadier general there. From around 1800, Cox was also politically active as a member of the Democratic-Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . Between 1801 and 1807 he was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly , of which he was president from 1804.

In the congressional election of 1808 , Cox was elected for the fourth seat of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded John Lambert on March 4, 1809 . He was able to exercise this mandate until his death on September 12, 1810. After that it fell to John A. Scudder after a special election .
