Jacob Reynier Wortendyke (born November 27, 1818 in Chestnut Ridge , Bergen County , New Jersey , †  November 7, 1868 in Jersey City , New Jersey) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jacob Wortendyke initially enjoyed a private school education and then attended Rutgers College in New Brunswick until 1839 . For the next ten years he worked as a teacher. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1853, he began practicing this profession in Jersey City. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional elections of 1856 Wortendyke was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Alexander CM Pennington on March 4, 1857 . Since he was defeated by Republican William Pennington in 1858 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was determined by the events leading up to the civil war .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Wortendyke worked as a lawyer again. Between 1860 and 1868 he served as president of the New Jersey Water Board . Since 1865 he was also President of the Riparian Commission of New Jersey . In 1868 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York , where Horatio Seymour was nominated as a presidential candidate. Jacob Wortendyke died in Jersey City on November 7, 1868.
