Michael James Pappas (born December 29, 1960 in New Brunswick , New Jersey ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 1999 he represented the state of New Jersey in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Michael Pappas attended Alma Preparatory School in Zarephath and then Seton Hall University in South Orange . He then worked in the insurance industry. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became a member of the National Association of Counties , where he chaired the Commission on Services and Education. He was also a member of the National Policy Forum of the Republican National Committee . In 1994, Pappas was the chairman of the New Jersey Association of Counties . At the same time he headed a commission for the unification of laws at the state level ( Judicial Unification Transition Committee ). From 1984 to 1986 Pappas was a member of Somerset County County Council. He was also on the Franklin parish council . He was also mayor of this place in 1983 and 1984.

In the 1996 congressional election , Pappas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of New Jersey , where he succeeded Dick Zimmer on January 3, 1997 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat Rush D. Holt in 1998 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1999 . Michael Pappas worked for the Small Business Administration during the George W. Bush presidency .
